ElizaOS and Virtuals: Spawning On-Chain AI Agents

In October 2024, an experimental AI chatbot promoted a memecoin called Goatseus Maximus ($GOAT) to more than 100,000 X followers. Within weeks, the token reached approximately $1.3 billion in market cap. The chatbot, Truth Terminal — built by researcher Andy Ayrey — did not hold a wallet or execute a single trade. Ayrey retained manual control of all wallet activity. What Truth Terminal provided was narrative propagation at scale.

That episode triggered one of the fastest sector rotations in recent crypto history. Within three months, projects framing themselves as AI agents had accumulated a combined market cap of roughly $15 billion. By mid-2026, most of those gains were gone.

This article traces two projects at the centre of that cycle: ElizaOS, the open-source framework that made crypto-native AI agents buildable, and Virtuals Protocol, the launchpad that made them co-ownable. It also examines the gap between what these tools actually deliver and what the surrounding token market priced in.

ElizaOS: The Open-Source Backbone

In October 2024, developer Shaw Walters published a TypeScript agent framework called Eliza to GitHub under the ai16z DAO — a project whose name parodied the venture firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). The framework gave developers a structured path to building AI agents that operate simultaneously across Discord, X/Twitter, Telegram, Slack, Farcaster, and DeFi protocols.

Its architecture rests on three components:

ElizaOS v2, released in 2025, added Hierarchical Task Networks (HTN) — a planning method that lets agents break complex goals into executable sub-tasks — and an event-driven pipeline for simultaneous cross-platform operation.

The rebrand and the token. On 28 January 2025, the ai16z DAO renamed itself to ElizaOS after the real Andreessen Horowitz firm raised brand confusion concerns. The associated token, AI16Z, subsequently migrated to the ticker ELIZAOS on 6 November 2025 at a 1:6 ratio, expanding total supply from approximately 6.6 billion to 11 billion tokens on Solana.

A distinction worth making explicit: ELIZAOS governs the ecosystem DAO and compensates contributors. It does not entitle holders to revenue generated by agents built on the framework. The software and the token are deliberately decoupled — anyone can run ElizaOS agents without holding ELIZAOS.

Virtuals Protocol: Tokenizing the Agent

Where ElizaOS provided the building blocks, Virtuals Protocol — launched on Base, Ethereum's Layer 2, in October 2024 — offered a way to co-own an agent. Its core proposition: wrap an AI agent in an ERC-20 token and allow any wallet holder to acquire a stake. The platform's base currency is $VIRTUAL, with a fixed supply of one billion tokens, which serves as the mandatory liquidity pair for every agent token launched on the protocol.

Bonding curves and locked liquidity. Each agent token launches via a bonding curve — a price mechanism where each successive purchase incrementally raises the price, rewarding earlier participants with lower entry costs. Once the curve completes, liquidity locks permanently in a decentralized pool. Revenue an agent earns is structured to flow into buybacks and burns of its token, creating a mechanical link between agent activity and token price.

The GAME framework. Virtuals developed its own cognitive layer: GAME (Goal-Action-Mind-Engine), which supports foundation models including Llama 3.3 70B, DeepSeek R1/V3, and Qwen 2.5 72B. GAME Cloud provides a low-code web interface for deploying agents targeting X/Twitter — no programming required for basic configurations. The open-source GAME SDK gives developers full customization.

The Agent Commerce Protocol. ACP is Virtuals' specification for inter-agent commerce: agents discover each other, negotiate tasks, and settle payments in VIRTUAL on-chain — the proposed plumbing for an economy where one agent hires another for a subtask and pays autonomously on completion, without human involvement.

By September 2025, Virtuals had hosted over 18,000 deployed agents across Base, Ethereum, Solana, Ronin, and Arbitrum, with more than $8 billion in DEX volume processed. Notable examples include AIXBT, an agent producing on-chain market commentary, and Luna, an AI influencer with more than 500,000 TikTok followers and her own $LUNA token.

What These Agents Actually Do

The practical reality of deployed agents is narrower than their positioning implies.

Most ElizaOS agents post to social platforms, respond to DMs, and optionally execute limited DeFi actions — swaps, bridges, basic staking — through plugin calls using a private key stored in the runtime. The operator defines which actions are permitted and within what parameters. The mechanics of wallets, gas, and token approvals still apply: the agent automates transactions within defined constraints rather than bypassing them.

Virtuals agents using GAME can trigger wallet transfers and protocol interactions autonomously within configured limits. ACP inter-agent hiring is operational at limited scale.

Persistent limitations remain significant. Agents cannot yet reliably navigate arbitrary web interfaces, handle captchas, or produce trustworthy predictions about external events. The most accurate characterization of most deployed agents today is a sophisticated social-media chatbot with an API wallet attached — useful for specific narrow tasks, not the self-directing economic actor that surrounding valuations implied.

The Boom, the Peak, and the Crash

The aggregate market cap of AI-agent-linked tokens climbed from near zero in October 2024 to approximately $15 billion by early January 2025. The VIRTUAL token reached an all-time high of roughly $5.07 on 2 January 2025. AI16Z peaked at a market cap of approximately $2.66 billion.

The correction arrived fast. In a single week during late January 2025, the sector shed roughly 44% of its market cap, according to Blockworks. VIRTUAL fell approximately 46% that week; AI16Z fell approximately 52%. As of mid-2026, VIRTUAL trades roughly 81% below its all-time high. Most smaller agent tokens are down 90% or more from their peaks.

The pattern follows a recognizable crypto-narrative arc: early speculation priced in utility not yet demonstrated, bonding-curve mechanics amplified price discovery on the way up, and the subsequent absence of durable on-chain revenue triggered cascading sell-offs.

The headline figure of 18,000+ deployed agents obscures a winner-takes-most distribution. Fewer than a dozen agents account for the majority of the sector's remaining market cap; most deployed agents have negligible trading volume and generate no measurable on-chain revenue.

Launching an Agent Today

Via Virtuals GAME Cloud (no code required): Visit virtuals.io, connect a wallet holding VIRTUAL tokens, configure the agent's name, personality, goals, and target platform through the web interface, and fund the bonding curve. No programming required for basic deployments targeting X/Twitter.

Via ElizaOS (developer-friendly): Install Node.js, clone the repository at github.com/elizaOS/eliza, edit a JSON character file, and install the appropriate platform and chain plugins via the elizaos CLI. A social-posting agent can be live within an hour for a developer with Node.js familiarity.

Both paths leave the operator controlling a private key that governs the agent's on-chain wallet. The principle of not your keys, not your coins extends here: if the key lives on a third-party hosted service, you do not fully control what the agent does on-chain. The custody risks, prompt injection vulnerabilities, and spending-limit mechanics are examined in Part 5 of this series.

Narrative vs. Durable Product

The agent-token cycle produced genuine infrastructure. ElizaOS has an active open-source contributor base, 170+ integrations, and a maturing v2 architecture. Virtuals has a functioning on-chain tokenization primitive and a credible inter-agent commerce specification in ACP. These tools are real contributions to the crypto developer ecosystem.

What the data did not support: the thesis that owning an agent token is equivalent to holding equity in an autonomous revenue-generating business. Agent revenues across the Virtuals ecosystem remain small relative to aggregate token valuations. The comparison to the NFT cycle — genuine technical primitive, speculative overshoot, prolonged correction — is not unfair.

The 2026 question is whether ACP-enabled multi-agent workflows generate measurable economic output sufficient to justify token valuations, or whether the agent-token meta closes without utility ever catching the narrative.
