Arbitrum Stylus pause explained: Arbitrum has temporarily stopped new Stylus contract activations after an emergency security action. The pause does not shut down Arbitrum or disable every app already in use. A separate safeguard could delay withdrawals to Ethereum if triggered, so users should distinguish that possible delay from the activation pause itself.
What changed this week?
In a notice dated 2 October 2026, Arbitrum’s Security Council announced an emergency action affecting new Stylus activations. Stylus lets developers run programs written in languages such as Rust alongside conventional Ethereum Virtual Machine, or EVM, contracts on Arbitrum. The action concerns a step that makes new Stylus program code executable; it is not a general halt of the network.
CryptoSlate reported that the pause followed concerns about AI-assisted attack risks. That description is context for the security response, not proof that a particular wallet or app was compromised. The practical change for a wallet holder is narrower: an app that needs to activate fresh Stylus code may have to wait, while activity that does not need a new activation can generally proceed.
This matters because a self-custody wallet gives you control of your keys, but it cannot make an app’s contract available or bypass a rollup’s withdrawal process. If you are about to use an unfamiliar Arbitrum app or move assets to Ethereum, check the app’s status and the route’s expected timing before signing.
What does a Stylus activation pause actually stop?
Deploying contract code and activating Stylus code are distinct steps. Activation prepares a Stylus program so Arbitrum can execute it. A developer can therefore have code ready without being able to turn a new program into a usable app during an activation pause. Arbitrum’s documentation explains how Stylus fits alongside EVM execution.
The pause can also affect an existing app if its planned upgrade requires activation of new Stylus code. An app that already uses activated code is in a different position: the new-activation gate does not, by itself, switch that code off. An app may still experience its own outage or choose to limit features while its team assesses the situation.
The distinction is between new code becoming executable and transactions using code that is already executable. A wallet interface may still open even when a specific new feature cannot launch. Conversely, a failed app interaction does not establish that the entire chain has stopped.
Which Arbitrum apps and actions remain usable?
The answer depends on what a transaction calls. The emergency action is aimed at new Stylus activations, so it should not be read as a blanket suspension of ordinary transfers, EVM contracts, or existing activated Stylus programs. Check the relevant app’s own notice before relying on a particular feature.
| Activity | Effect of the activation pause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sending an existing token between Arbitrum addresses | No new Stylus activation is normally needed | Confirm the token, network, address, and fee |
| Using an existing EVM app | The Stylus activation gate does not directly target EVM code | Check the app’s operational status and transaction details |
| Using an already activated Stylus app | Existing activation is not the new activation being paused | Check whether the app has separately limited service |
| Launching a new Stylus app or code upgrade | May be blocked until new activations resume | Look for a developer update before depositing funds |
| Withdrawing to Ethereum | A separate safeguard could affect timing if triggered | Check the official bridge status and expected completion time |
An app can combine several contracts. Its main interface might work while one new Stylus feature remains unavailable, so a label such as “Arbitrum app” is too broad to predict every outcome. The useful question is whether the transaction depends on new Stylus code that has yet to be activated.
Balances held at your address do not disappear because activation is paused. You can still inspect addresses and transactions through your wallet or a block explorer. If a transaction fails, read the failure and verify the app’s status before trying again; repeated submissions may incur fees without solving an activation problem.
How is the withdrawal safeguard different?
Arbitrum’s emergency notice also raises a separate issue for exits to Ethereum: a safeguard that could delay withdrawals if triggered. The condition matters. The Stylus activation pause alone should not be treated as an announcement that every withdrawal is already delayed by this additional measure.
A standard withdrawal from an optimistic rollup has stages. The request starts on Arbitrum, then the exit must satisfy the rollup’s normal requirements before it can be finalized on Ethereum. Arbitrum’s documentation describes a typical wait of about seven days for a standard Arbitrum One withdrawal. A triggered safeguard could add time to that process; it would not give a wallet provider the power to finalize the exit early.
Depositing from Ethereum to Arbitrum, sending tokens between Arbitrum addresses, and withdrawing from Arbitrum to Ethereum are different operations. A safeguard on the last route does not automatically imply that the first two have stopped. Likewise, a third-party fast bridge may quote a shorter time because it uses its own liquidity and contracts. That quote is not the same as the standard rollup withdrawal guarantee. Our explainer on how CCIP 2.0 trades speed against security checks draws the same line between a fast route and settlement finality.
For background on why rollup exits can take time, see our guide to optimistic and zero-knowledge Ethereum rollups. The waiting period is a property of the route, not a sign that your wallet has lost control of its keys.
What should a self-custody wallet user do?
Most holders do not need to move assets merely because new activations are paused. A measured check is more useful than an urgent transaction prompted by a social post. If you plan to interact with an app or bridge, take these steps:
- Identify the action. A routine transfer, an existing app interaction, a new Stylus feature, and an Ethereum withdrawal face different constraints.
- Check primary updates. Start with the Security Council notice, then look for an update from the app or bridge you intend to use.
- Review the transaction in your wallet. Confirm the network, destination, token, amount, and any approval. An activation pause is no reason to grant a new token allowance to an unknown contract.
- Allow time for an exit. If you need funds on Ethereum by a particular date, verify the current withdrawal estimate before starting. Keep enough assets available on the chain where you expect to use them.
- Ignore “emergency migration” requests. An unsolicited site asking for your recovery phrase or a broad approval cannot restore Stylus activation or accelerate a rollup withdrawal.
These checks matter even if you use the same wallet across chains. Self-custody controls signing; the app’s contracts and the bridge’s finalization rules control what happens after a valid transaction is submitted. Our guide to reading a crypto incident report can help separate a confirmed effect from speculation as updates arrive.
What remains uncertain as of 4 October 2026?
The emergency action tells users what has been paused, but it does not establish when new Stylus activations will resume. It also does not mean the separate withdrawal safeguard has been triggered. An app-specific status or a later Security Council update may change the practical answer for a particular transaction.
Until then, avoid treating every failed Arbitrum transaction as evidence of this incident. A transaction can fail because of an app error, insufficient fees, a token approval issue, or a separate network problem. The activation pause has a specific scope, and the possible withdrawal delay has a separate trigger.
The immediate takeaway is simple: existing Arbitrum activity can generally continue, while developers may be unable to activate new Stylus code. If you plan an Ethereum withdrawal, confirm the live route and timing before you depend on the funds arriving.
